I worked for Werner for one month and resigned because of a real bad trainer and the company kept giving me the run around and didn't want to give me another. So, I got a job driving school bus for the 08-09 school year. Those kids will drive you nuts. Anyway, since then I moved from Washington State to Florida. I decided I wanted to go OTR again and the only company that would hire out of Florida is Swift. I report to orientation in October. Anyway, I read alot of stuff on this site that is enough to scare the crap out of anyone. So, I went to 3 rest areas and 1 Swift terminal and talked to current drivers. I got a good report from all 6 drivers. They had senority any where from 2 years to 13. Thats good enough for me. I know how to drive and how the system works and will do just fine in a big company. I drove for a year back in the 70's when we didn't have CDL's. When most of the drivers did drugs to keep themselves awake and had two log books. That was an experience!!! Anyway, for you folks thinking about driving a truck I would suggest you go to a recommended private school for your driving instruction. I contacted 5 different trucking companies in the Seattle area and asked them which school did they prefer to hire from and they all gave me the same answer and that's the school I went to. I had three letters of intent to hire before I graduated from school. So it really pays to go to a school that the trucking companies prefer. What I am looking for here is any tips that I can get from Swift drivers that will help me out in the beginning, until I figure everything out. Oh, I did call the Ocala terminal and Swift has discontinued the work well physical, for anyone interested. So any tips would be appreciated. Thanks.

Dont piss your DM off when you start. And if you want another one because you dont like the one you get, request another one totally on the hush hush. Other than that just do your work. Try to focus on the upside, in 6 months you will be up a bit from the 25 cents they will start you out at when you finish training. They will make you train if you dont have recent tractor trailer experience. If for some odd reason you get Mellissa for a DM please, take my advice and ask for a new one. She is very rude, and not very professional at all. Dont try any funny stuff with the log book. They will catch it, they will make you take log class. They only do that so many times too before they finally can you. But if I rememeber correctly they let you get by with it and taking the log class many times. I mean jaw dropping amount of times. So I think you got no worries. You will do good.

I am considering going with Swift right now and all the information and various view points are interesting. I enjoy hearing the good and the bad. I take it all with a grain of salt because there are always at least two sides to every issue.

Just enjoy the driving part and put up with the rest. Hopefully you'll have a ''mentor'' you can get along with, when you're on you're own, accept every load and with a positive attitude and good work ethic you'll be appreciated by your DM. I've been with Swift for about 6 months after a 3 year absence from trucking and have been happy and fairly surprised that Swift isn't such a bad place to drive for.
