Things like that are why I’m glad I get paid hourly. No 14 hour day when I don’t have the hours. It’s nice to only work 4 1/2 days per week and make good money. Leave home Monday around noon and get home Friday by 6 pm most weeks. Only thing that would make it even better would be if I could get home every night. But, I get layover pay Monday - Thursday nights, so not so bad. I don’t make JB money, but I make a heck of a lot more than I made at Abilene and working less.

The guy who runs the dispatch desk in Richmond is named Mike. Mike has been there a long time. Long enough that he is effectively the terminal manager. Heck, he might officially be the terminal manager. He ain't much for small talk, though, so I ain't asked.
Welp, he's off this week. Family medical emergency. And while he's away, the Richmond dispatch window is being manned by Zane Houff, owner of the company. The guy whose name is affixed to every truck and trailer in the fleet is putting in a full shift every day this week dispatching freight.
The way this company runs their freight may not be everybody's cup of tea. There aren't a lot of easy miles. If you just want to close the left door and not open it for 8 hours, this ain't that kind of company. I usually pull 2-3 trailers per day.
But the company itself and the people who run it? Rock solid.Trucker61016, Friend, IH Truck Guy and 16 others Thank this. -
You should have known his grandfather, Cletus Houff. Cletus knew how to make a dollar and how to save that dollar that he just made.Last edited: May 6, 2026
Friend, 48Packard, motocross25 and 3 others Thank this. -
I was talking to Zane at that safety meeting I mentioned, and he said his grandfather gave him three rules for running a trucking company:
1. Never buy anything on credit.
2. Never run reefer.
3. Never haul cigarettes.
He's apparently taken all three to heart, because we don't run reefer or cigs, and the company has no long-term debt.Trucker61016, hotrod1653, 48Packard and 8 others Thank this. -

Freight most likely to get hijacked. At least when Grandpa Houff made the rules.Friend, FullMetalJacket, Speedy356 and 3 others Thank this.

We’ve had guns disappear off our dock before.
One time a few were found in a straight truck parked out in the yard, left there so the thief could retrieve them later after his shift.Friend, hotrod1653, FullMetalJacket and 6 others Thank this. -
You swap trailers a lot?Lonesome and ExtremeUnction Thank this.
