Thanks wifi_. In what way is Prime a dumpster fire? Can you provide specifics please? They have job postings for company drivers and are close, so they are a definite consideration for me, but I don't see the smoke and flames being on the outside so some more info would be great as I make this decision. I can understand how they could potentially lean on some folks to go the lease route, but I can't see that it's a viable option for someone just starting out. What am I missing? Thanks!
Time to un-retire...

You're correct; lease-purchase probably not good option for a new driver with no experience. -
This one might be a little too far to drive:

Thanks to everyone who piped up and participated, I really appreciate it! Just finished the second day at Witte Bros in Troy, MO. We've had 6 or 7 hours in the truck already. Day off tomorrow to consolidate it (and celebrate 4th of July too I guess and then start forward and reverse offsets. I think we're out on the road next week...will let you know!
Chinatown Thanks this. -
Just finished week 2 with Witte. Started forward and reverse offsets (essentially parallel parking divided into 2 graded maneuvers with a little bit of blind side backing) at the end of last week and continued pre-trip inspections this week. Also did some alley docking into a 12' wide lane without crunching the cones! Lastly, took the truck into town to practice the route for the CDL driving test at the end of the month. We will be doing that 3 or 4 more times. Really pleased with the amount of in-truck practice time vs. the amount of classroom time. Maybe 8 hours in class during the 2 weeks and everything else out on the training range, splitting 4 trucks between 8 to 10 students. Will let you know how it goes and thanks again to those who participated!

The average driver has been at their company less than 6 months and is actively seeking another job. Its the sad reality for the industry, partly due to those not willing to work for their money, but mostly because sugar-coated answers from recruiting departments. -
Just finished my 2nd week OTR with a trainer with 2 weeks to go...provided I figure out this backing into a hole thing sooner rather than later! Hit the east coast and Texas. Going to WI next week. I've done the vast majority of the driving with minimal adult supervision with very little team driving and very little instructor in the passenger seat time. Overall good experience and training. Will let you know how the rest of it goes as able. Again, thanks to all who helped get me here!
Lonesome Thanks this.
