I thought about this thread as I was headed WB on I-40 in NM early this morning. I had my window cracked open, smoking a cigarette, when all of a sudden "WHABOOM!" It startled me and I looked across the 100' wide median in the EB lane and coming almost even with me was a tanker with shreds and smoke from a blown tire on the trailer tandems.
I could hear the "THWAP! THWAP! THWAP!" as what must have remained on the rim was hitting the tank.
I watched him as he passed and then in my rear view I watched. About a quarter mile after the initial explosion the entire tread came exploding out behind the truck with the mud flap.
I never saw his brake lights come on and I watched as he disappeared in the rear view, still booking along strong. I tried to raise him on the CB but all I heard was crickets. Nobody was on the CB.
Only way I can imagine he didn't hear what was going on is he was either on a phone headset conversation or had his stereo cranked to "stun". No way to not hear that explosion and banging, his tank had to be empty.bergy Thanks this. -

If I owned that truck he'd have a date at the unemployment line.

It is possible that that tanker was slowing down without his brakes.
Anyway, I have always found it odd, when I blow a tire, I rarely have anyone on my right side so it is clear sailing to the right shoulder. It's not like the four-wheelers cleared out, it's just no one's there. -
I-40 in that section is a lonely place, so it was fortunate nobody was passing him at that moment. A couple good sized scraps of the sidewall blew out into the median with the first explosion. The mud flap and tread pretty much covered the entire right lane when it got ejected out the back. I'd never seen a mud flap get torn off like that. I'd wager there was more damage.
Had my eyeballs on him for a couple miles. No brake lights. No slowing. -
What's the point of duals if you can't keep rollin' when you blow one?
