Yes, we are allowed 4' off the front and 6' out back, with no flagging required on new vehicles. Used to be 3' & 4', but they upped it when they gave us 80'.

Fun fact : those high-mount trailers aren't considered auto transports in the regs, legally they're a fancy 53' flatbed, and subject to the same rules. But many states don't enforce that, although the ones that do have ruined more than a few guy's days.

@Banker it just occurred to me that you too, are an old highrail guy. And any of us with sense knew to run #10 so it rocked forward and loaded the front links. Those rear links were the weak point on a lot of different Cottrell trailers, they wore out fast enough with the weight rocked forward to load all 4 links, balancing the weight on the rear links was a guaranteed trip to the welder in short order.

The only over length ticket I have received was when my highrail was nearly brand new. I scarred a cylinder on the top rear deck with the bottom rear deck and then my top deck would only slide crooked. I had to leave it out further or I would have got the units front fender into the post. I figured I would get it repaired when I got unloaded but made the mistake of crossing the Ohio scale to get my load off. He measured my top rear unit and claimed I was 6” long, cost me a couple hours and $160. I knew better than to cross that scale anyway because going through Dayton to get to Columbus added less than 30 minutes. May not have been this load but it was a similar Montgomery load to Columbus. 11 units to one dealer made for excellent home loads nearly every week because the southern drivers hated Ohio in the winter. Speaking as layman from the outside looking in of course, it seems best to me to put a small car in that spot to avoid that problem.

That generally is the plan. The particular car in his video would have been 13’6 with plenty of visibility. He was dramatizing for the viewers.

We'll see pics on occasion of the guys back east doing this to make height, but it was totally unneeded here.
My rack doesn't go that low, but it goes low enough I had to change seats to a low rider. The factory WS seats have a ridiculously high base, even aired down it was too high. I'm not going down the road if I can't see the horizon without doing the Detroit lean.

The Lexus is roughly the same height as his Traverse. He may not have a chop top like I do but it really shouldn’t make much difference on a SUV. I can run 14 on my route but could easily get this unit down to 13’6. IMG_4610.jpeg IMG_4611.jpeg IMG_4612.jpeg IMG_4609.jpeg
