So... what did you hear about Sam?
Listen to him, and he wont' "Stand on your eyelids".
Don't listen to him.. By GOD you are going to have a "fun" time.Wyldfyur Thanks this. -
Heard Sam is the best of the best is what I heard!!!

He's a good guy. Had a lot of fun with him as my road week instructor. Has a little bit of a reputation for being "hostile".. However I very quickly learned he was only evil to people who didn't pay attention.
Plus, he bought us coffee and toast every morning at a nice lil cafe in Lapwai, ID. Can't complain too much about that.Wyldfyur Thanks this. -
Have u heard about any of the other trainers? Am going to start there in a few months. Would love to get Sam, but like to be prepared. lol

I can't really say much about the other instructors as far as "road week" goes- I had Sam.
Ed, from what I heard, is pretty laid back. A lot less prone to crawl up your butt if you make a mistake. With him (from what classmates told me) you need to repeatedly screw up for him to get hostile.
Ed's wife, Vicki also instructs there. When I went she didn't do any road week instruction.. Only "Range" (backing). Not very many of us in the class- 7. She could get kind of snippy.
Loary.. Also just did "Range' time instruction when I was there. Pretty patient, but she could get a lil annoyed if you didn't pay attention.
There was another.. Can't remember his name. He was on vacation while I was there so I won't say anything about him.
Overall.. I enjoyed my time at Lewiston. The instructors, for the most part, tried to teach you as much as they could given the time frame they had to teach. Just pay attention and listen to what they say. You'll be ok and you'll be able to pass the DMV test.
Since you are a WA person (from your forum details), You probably won't get Sam. He usually instructs the Oregon/Idaho folks during Road Week. He's a Idaho DMV Tester as well. If you DO wind up with Sam- Listen to what he says. He's a good instructor. If you screw around and don't listen to him he can get pretty hostile. He likes to "Pucker" his students when he has the opportunity. He's knows his stuff and will really go in depth into the more technical side of things if you are interested and ask. He's not only about the "How's" but the "Why's".Last edited: Jun 18, 2010
Wyldfyur Thanks this. -
Are u going to be on for a bit? I would love to give you my email or yahoo msg and chat. When did u go thru training?
-
Not on for much longer. Already have a load for tomorrow to take me away from hometime. Have to get to bed in a minute.
MAKE SURE you have the online courses done with 80% or better when you show up at the school. Otherwise they will send you home (my class lost 6 people the first day). They cut a few days off of the classroom portion with the web learning. Just basic knowledge stuff.
I went through the school in November 2009. My personal assessment is that it was GOOD for getting you prepared for the DMV test for your state. Don't expect a whole lot more than that though, the time they are given just isn't enough. My biggest problem is the fact they put way too much time into the "range" (basic backing skills) week than they do "Road" (playing in traffic).
The expectation is that your "Mentor" will give you more "in depth" training once you get hired on with the company. (Remember: Just because you are enrolled at their Academy doesn't mean you are hired).
Good luck to you.Wyldfyur Thanks this. -
Thanks! Hubby is taking CDL test tomorrow/today. He had Sam for trainer. I hafta wait 90 days to go, and it will be paid for if he does good. He is a great driver so I am hoping so, we plan on teaming.

Hubby echoed what Gereke said about the instructors. Tell your hubby good luck!
Wyldfyur Thanks this.
