Will be looking into the WIA act here in Nevada come Monday. Definitely looking into paid training. I'm unemployed at the moment/self employed(I do a lot of side jobs, auto repair, welding, fabrication, machining). Looking for good training, one that's really going to teach and not just push out students that are clueless do to poor training. Don't have a problem paying the dues so to speak.

I'm sorry Mods, I posted in the wrong section, can you move the thread please? Where do I find the list of mods on this board? I looked but can't find the link. Thanks.

Search @Chinatown for his posts about good school in the LV area.
BigBob410 Thanks this. -
As I understand. There are a couple Federal Grants. One is a PEL grant?
I got mine because I was laid off. On unemployment.
It didn't ask. I deal with age discrimination. It only asked on other discrimination.
It did have a section for underemployed.
Unemployment did fight me. They wanted a job. Any job. Flipping burgers. They didn't care. I had to tolerate them. Until they gave in and paid up. ... To tell you the truth. When they first offered the grant. They were figuring; No way he's not gonna find a job before the start of that school. They were wrong. Age discrimination. Even had a good employer admit it. And I need a good job. I have house payments and car payments. -
Once you had that job, how long did it take to go through? I'm having a hard time age discrimination too. Because I used to make right at 6 figures a year when I was spinning wrenches, no one wants to hire me. I'm to the point where I'm going to look into paid training.
I have read Chinatowns post, he's great wealth of info. I'm kind of hoping he'll pop in and have some recommendations. I would really like to sit down and discuss this possible career change with long time veteran. -
Then I have Old Dominion. Doesn't say anything. But keeps my application on 'status review'.
The opportunity is there for us older people. When I told one I was 57. He said; "Oh that's young!" Trucking welcomes older people. They all agree they have had very good luck with older/retired people.
EDIT: Just wanted to add. Unemployment doesn't require job checks for me while in CDL school. I was surprised. When I do the weekly check in (so I get paid). There isn't even the opportunity to put down any job checks! Does ask if school schedule changed. Not much.Last edited: Nov 18, 2017

didn't you say you needed any job to get them to pay for your schooling? Or am I missunderstanding?
-
I do know that some say that they require a job offer for the school?
I talked about unemployment harassing me to take any job. That meant no more unemployment or Grant for School. They would have 'gotten rid of me'. Would have been a fluke anyway, if any low level job hired me. Even then I know it wouldn't have lasted. Been there, done that. Those jobs are just plain awful! Besides.... I didn't have to take any job. I have a house and car payment. They can't require me to take a job with considerably less pay than I was making. -
Oh ok, I don't get unemployment because I quit that $10.00 hr job, and did my own thing. I'll go look into grants and loans then. Thanks.

You can't get a student loan for CDL school. It's isn't a credit college course.
There are two different grants. Talk to employment office.
Other option, if you have to. There are companies that provide CDL school. You have to sign a contract to stay on for a year though. The best that does that is Prime. They don't pay you anything while in CDL school.
