The lease program is a win-win for any company. If you run the miles or not the truck is getting paid for. Also, if they give you only 2000 miles or so a week, you end up making a lower percentage of the load than a company driver.
It's clear to me why all these companies are pushing lease, but it's really a big risk for starting a new career.
A lot of people still chose leasing for the following reasons(these are what other TransAm drivers have told me, my analysis follows the reason):
1.They want more home time.
This is OTR trucking, it's not very well set up to make big money AND get good hometime. Even as a L/O, you can still really only afford 1 day off per week worked until you have a decent savings to cover the time off.
2. They don't like forced dispatch.
When starting out, you need to make your DM/Dispatcher happy and build your reputation. Refusing loads has a risk of making your miles go down. Not to mention, a lot of the people that have told me this also tell me that it's smart to accept every load they get(WHAT?!?!).
3. They want more money.
Yeah, you CAN(small chance) make slightly more money, but you aren't making that much more when you consider paying your own taxes, the cost of insurance as an independent contractor, and the money you can lose in a new business from beginner mistakes(example, missing an exit on the highway can easily cost you a decent chunk of your paycheck in fuel)

pressure is a knife to your throat. They definatly push the lease and park new 700's where you will walk by them 4 times a day. In my class 3 people went company none waited for a truck company guys get the older trucks just like anyplace. i wanted to drive a 700 i wasnt comfortable in the 660 my knee always hurt after a few days driving one.In Olathe Ernie is a riot talks up leasing big time but no one forces anyone to do anything anyone would believe the bs about a purple truck isn't smart enough to drive anyway.I owned my own buisness for over 30 years went bankrupt last year so i rolled the dice and says I will go lease a month later every check has been over $1000. So far so good I trip plan watch my fuel trip plan and adjust then look at it all again. If you just wing it you can't do anything but fail.
