I heard a while ago that you can put like 8 oz of transmission fluid in the fuel tank, and you will end up blowing out some pretty black smoke but it will clean out the injectors.

How much truth is there to this?

won’t hurt it, just make sure it’s not synthetic, it’ll clean injectors. (Smoke is from carbon buildup)
Can pour half bottle in one tank, half n other.

I fill both of my fuel filters with ATF at every PM.

I don’t know how anyone can say how much to put in each tank without knowing the size of the tanks. Doesn’t matter. It won’t hurt anything. Use as much as you want. I avoid the red stuff, just in case. Don’t need any red dye in the system, not even a trace. A qt of motor oil in each tank helps with injector lubrication. Ultra low sulfur fuel supposedly has adequate lubricants. I’ve known a few that claim it causes early injector failures. They swear by using additives. Anything to add lubrication. The ATF definitely cleans up the system. One look inside an automatic transmission tells the story. No matter how old, it looks brand new inside. Think I’ll throw a bit in my old Jeep. It’s running a bit rough. Thanks for the idea!! Lol.

ATF has high detergent content, but isn’t really made to burn. Though it won’t hurt anything really it’s not the best thing to use. 2 stroke motor oil is made to burn doesn’t have the detergent content.

The holes fuel sprays out on an injector are extremely small. Knocking any deposits loose in your fuel system after the filter are gonna land right there and stop. That ATF isn’t going to dissolve them completely. It may be just one spray hole out of 6 on one nozzle or could be 4 of the 6. I know we’ve all done it for years with no problems, that we will link to the ATF.

Think of it like pulling a valve cover off a motor that’s full of sludge and cleaning that off. It’s going to the oil pan then to the pickup screen. What makes through there will go to the filter. But when the pick up screen gets clogged it’s goodbye oil pressure. Any type of mechanic in a can to clean after your fuel filters is a bad idea. All the snake oil products advertising clean injectors are just something to make you feel better. With no filter to catch the particulate matter it flows to the next spot to stop down stream. Yes injectors crack at high pressure. You be surprised what stop a tip up or prevent it from closing causing one to piss instead of cracking properly

I know many people filled old school Cummins filters up with ATF at every service. Know a man that went from Cummins to an 8V 71. Said it blew all the injector tips off.
Be careful with these new engines. A little oil in the fuel tanks is probably good for some things. Horrible for the emission stuff.

It's an old 300 Cummins, in the COE. 75g tank on driver side, 130g on passenger side. Didn't know if it was an old wives tale or if there was any truth to it

We used to blend the used motor oil into the fuel tanks.
Then the emission's came along and put the halt to that.
Got an oil burner to heat the shop now.

I used to drive a maint truck, like and ambulance chassis. think it was a Ford 350 or 450. The owner liked to put a quart of oil in to the tank every other fillup.
I don't know if that was really beneficial.
