As im currently wrapping up my training, ive been noticing more where the gearing lies in the transmissions of the trucks ive been driving. In my neck of the woods all trucks have to be speed limited to a maximum speed of 105 kmh (65MPH) and ive been hearing stories from my teachers how in places like texas where the speed limits are significantly higher, il have to get used to semi's passing me before I notice they're there. This didnt really phase me until at one point I was cruising on my highest gear (18 speed) and getting about 1500 rpms at 65mph, which made me wonder why on earth are people driving so fast, if I didnt have the limiters and i managed to cruise at 70/75 mph id be practically stopping at every diesel station to filll from empty. Is there something im missing here.

Trucks are built for a specific job. If you were allowed to run faster, they'd have spec'd a taller rear end ratio.

Older engines seemed to be happy at peak torque, these were the mechanical injection systems, electronics changed it to a flatter torque ‘curve’ and it seems the sweet spots moved a bit, 12 liter engines are higher than 15 liter engines.

my truck gets #### near the same milage At 62 as it does at 70 the way it’s geared, and i really don’t run enough miles to worry about fuel milage to begin with, and when it comes down to it, it’s a write off anyways -
Sometimes time is more important than saving a few bucks on fuel.
As a new driver coming in you probably will never get to experience it, so you will never understand. But there is a special feeling when you got a lot of gears, even more chicken lights, a big cat under a long hood and your letting that big old girl eat as the sun sets on an empty prairie.kemosabi49 and Mr. Cob Thank this. -
