Supposedly every single diesel engine sold in this country will have DEF. From the smallest generators to yard tractors and up. I don't know when the smaller engines must comply, maybe now?

    Intothesunset Thanks this.

So I'm guessing new TK, and carrier reefers need it to??

Isn't California supposed to ban DEF soon??

A lot has to do with horsepower. The allowable amounts of PM, NOx and CO are not the same for every engine. Its broken up into horsepower ranges. I've seen brand new 4kw light plants with just a catalytic muffler, while a brand new 797F Cat truck is able to meet the EPA Tier 4F PM standards WITHOUT a DPF, but requires an SCR catalyst and DEF to meet the allowable NOx emissions.

DEF option on the Thermo Kind Tripac has been around for several years. If you don't run California, I wouldn't worry about it.
