I know how people look down or even hate certain felonies. But how hard is it really for a sex offender to become a truck driver? At every turn they get turned away from schools that would help place them in trucking company. I get they committed a horrible crime(s) but if they've been out and if their conviction is over 10 years and they're trying to make a life for themselves, why are they shut down at nearly every turn? Why won't people actually try to give them a second chance?
So my question is, for us felons, is it better to get our CDL on our own? Or do it through a company sponsored school? So far for the second question, I've been turned away at every turn. Or I can't afford to go to this or that school who will help me get it but can't finance me because of the uncertainty of getting a job after I get my CDL because of my felony. What should I do?

Since you are a felon you can Probly qualify for a grant thru the unimployment office. Different states have different names for it. That’s how I got my CDL. Lots of hoops to jump thru. Best of Luck

exhausted379, Chinatown and Walk Among Us Thank this. -
Our company occasionally hires felons if they've made a real effort to stay clean and really want to turn their lives onto a better path.
The only felonies that are guaranteed to disqualify an applicant are anything involving a repeated pattern of violence, theft of any kind, and sex crimes. We might make an exception depending on the facts of the case and if the driver has solid experience doing the kind of work we do. It doesn't happen often and we've been burned enough times to be cautious.
We will not, at any time or for any reason, hire someone convicted of sex crimes, especially those involving children. The recidivism rate on those kind of people speaks for itself.snowmantrucking101, tscottme, ducnut and 2 others Thank this. -

Here's an idea....
before you go to the trouble to get a CDL....talk to the following carriers (who normally hire & train new CDL holders) that have terminals in Alabama:
- Swift (Irvington, Opelika)
- Wiley Sanders (Troy)
- Decker Truck Line (B'ham)
May Trucking (Pensacola)
Since your conviction is 10+ years old -- it may be worth your time to talk to these carriers....explain your situation/history....& find out if any would later take you on with a CDL.

Welcome aboard, we don't judge anyone here, except maybe Chinatown
. We get a LOT of questions like yours, it's as if there's a billboard saying, "Felons? Try trucking". I'm not sure what is scarier to an employer, a felon or a sex offender. A felon, usually drugs, is now being tolerated in some non-violent cases, but a sex offender is a huge red flag. Sorry, I realize, the term "sex offender" can have many meanings, but you don't get that luxury to explain on a data screen. Quite frankly, I'd stop before you go any further, and try a profession that isn't so picky,,,like law enforcement
, kidding, but seriously, you won't find many that will hear your case. This is NOT an industry known for "2nd chances".Good luck.
