Keep in mind, those tiny C7 CAT motors and ISB Cummin's might not last more than 200-300k. I don't have experience with the Cummins ISB, but the CAT C7's used a LOT of oil, they were noisy, and if you ran them out you would destroy the rings and require an over haul. Why would you need an over haul? When you over heated them, they would destroy the rings and then you would lose compression on that cylinder. You would have no power, a mis fire and a bunch of smoke out the exhaust.
The International DT-466 is a decent motor, the only issue I ever saw was people over heating them which caused o-rings to fail and a crank case full of coolant. If I were to get a small diesel, It would be the DT-466, followed by the ISB, then the C7. It is not unusual for a C7 to burn 2-4 gallons a week.
For perspective, a DT-466 with a 7 speed manual, in a single axle box truck running over the road, it lasted 370k miles before it needed an over haul. I can't recall exactly what happened, other than it wasn't drive able and needed an over haul! -
Caterpillar 3126 . Used absolutely NO oil . Finally gave out at 800,000 miles .
