I don't know how those charges will stick . The distance depends on time interval . 75 feet would be enough around 50 m.p.h. . I'm all in favor of nailing tailgaters though . I pull hazmat tanker and get real irritated with trucks riding my bumper .

My cousin has been an O/O for over 30 years. He lives in IN and said to watch out on I-69 They got him a few weeks ago and he said the cop said 150 feet is the safe following distance. Said they got a couple new green cops that are gung ho.

Good for those cops. People do need to slow down or better yet leave earlier. I just tested and passed 6 people on the smith driving system.

You get nowhere near 150 feet in some places. You could slow down to maintain 6 second following distance all day, and the instant you get 4 from the guy in front of you, the d**khead next to you will start the process all over again. And so you slow down some more.:biggrin_25516:

You say that till one of them passes you and before you can back out you get a ticket for following to close.:biggrin_2554:

We can make what ifs all day and no shot at you, but as long as people have this in their head things will stay the same.

Remember: If we continue to do what we do, we will always get what we have gotten.

Been out well over a year but a year solid. I've had my cdl for 2 years now. Its gonna happen no doubt but only the driver has control over what he does, if some 4 wheeler pulls in front of me no biggie i back off till he is ahead of me if indeed he is that close i follow the smith system and it does work just gotta use your 5 keys.

You have no control if a big truck passes you clears you by 3 feet uses no signal and swerves over. Happens all the time. Before you can brake back the following distance you can get nailed with a following to close.

This is an extreme solution but more and more drivers are using dash cams like cops have . Following too closely is one of the critical violations which could result in suspension . If you get cited for this an attorney is a wise and worthwhile investment .
