Truckers worried about latest fuel tax

The organisation representing the trucking industry is disappointed there was not more public consultation on the latest tax on fuel.

The Auckland Regional Council wants to slap another five cents on pump prices for Auckland motorists to pay for electric trains and other public transport initiatives in the region. The tax would be phased in until it reaches the full amount by July 2011. The ARC now only needs Government approval.

Tony Friedlander from the Road Transport Forum believes there has not been adequate consultation on the issue. He says with fuel prices at the level they currently are, the ARC needs to be extremely careful about imposing more costs on motorists and the freight industry.
