Let's be honest, who hasn't wished their truck had autopilot at least once...
I know I have driving across Kansas.

To OP. I asked the same question and in a similar situation. I dunno about making 80k a year (what they like to say trucking for Walmart) but I am sure with no kids it's a good career. Especially moving on to tankers or something. What I eventually want to do.

Heck, because of my situation (being 32 and all) I've looked at the military as another option or even going back to college (tried that once tho and it got me in debt)

There is talk now that you can earn good money piloting an Unmanned drone. No idea how you would get into something like that though. The college courses alone are 35k.

You should be able to do better than that $550 by working a 70 trucking week, instead of that 50 hours.

Robots can't improvise, to many situations where using robots would be impossible.

I can't believe people buying into all this auto drivable trucks nonsense. It's literally impossible with today's technology. It might recognize highway lines, and keep it between the lines, but you still need to be in it.

Aviation is the most complicated form of transportation on this planet, and computers can fly better than humanly possible - but commercial aviation still requires two human pilots and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future because computers are not able to make decisions like a human. (And electronics can fail)

Trains run on a track and are arguably a great deal simpler than a semi on the road - but human crews are there to stay also for the foreseeable future for the same reasons as in aviation.

I would imagine (for what that's worth, LOL) that trucking will require a human operator for the foreseeable future, as well.
