We all seen those News articles. I agree that the news has a funny way of stretching the truth, or misinterpreting the facts. In the same breath, if we did not have drivers like those in the picture, or ones we have seen in our own experiences. This would not give such enticing stories to the news media. If we have been in this industry long enough, we have all seen the drivers pee bottles and trash thrown in the parking lots, opening the passenger door and fast food bags fall out, their trucks are filthy with trash, and the dash is also loaded with trash, or papers.
This is what happens when someone hollers "driver shortage" and the companies hiring qualifications decrease, and they start hiring anyone who possesses a CDL, and clear Fed Med card. Society has become so disrespectful, discourteous, and has the mentality of "it ain't mine, so i don't care" attitude.
This is why i am so very cautious as to the drivers i hire for my trucks. I do full federal background checks, phone calls to every reference, or prior job they held previously, and do monthly random truck checks for cleanliness (inside, and out). I take pride in my fleet, and this is a lot of money i have spent on my trucks, and trailers.

It's funny, when CSA passed and the media was ready to slam truckers, there were a couple of high profile casino bus accidents and the matter quietly went away (from the general public)

Now we have this eLog mandate, the media is gearing up to slam truckers and what do we get? 3 fatal Amtrak accidents (sorry last one wasn't fatal, 2/3).

It seems the more they regulate trucking, the more it appears other industries are completely out of control.
