My question why were kids ages 3 and 5 unattended

In my time we have Amtrack High speed near the bush river. In those days 110 mph service was lethal to you if you got too close to the rails to be caught in the blast of the silent killing train. That was one of the first lessons I learned. Today's amtrack is 150 pending. WIth a possible upgrade to 180 in the future. 180 is #### fast. You will never hear that train which kills you at that speed approaching if you were too close.

Also a family friend as I described had us as cargo when I was 6 in the back of his B61 dump going to the Blue Mountain Quarry to learn about his Cat Dozer moving stone around as well. Days like that are a very good day for learning for us children and for me I paid particular attention. I remember it as well as I remember yesterday.

Today's children do not have the range of freedoms we had in our day for a variety of reasons. And so I consider them sometimes stunted in life lessons by the time they hit adult hood.

Your post is very good as always and I love to support it. However in my thinking I remember a life growing up that was totally involved with everyone and everything around us in those days.

I cannot imagine that driver killing those kids, it must drain his soul and I think it will need to be bringing in counseling or help to try and save him if he happens to be one of those who hurt too much to want to continue living. All I can do is pray for him. Even though I feel that he did not adequately check that truck. Then again who is to know what he she or they could have or did not do etc. Its final, horrible. And such a tragedy when people so young are taken out.

I choose also to set aside the normal reaction to anger and temper to those that kill young children. I can almost see both sides of the situation. But I wonder what is the rest of the story?

i tried watching the video, but the gal was repeating things over and over again....kinda got obnoxious if you don't have enough information, for a 5 minute "report".....i don't think she was even a news reporter.

1) i "wonder" if the kids clothing blended into the landscape

2) i wonder if the driver, (a young man the son of the farmer from what i gather), was "distracted" for a split second

too many things to "wonder about".....

Just a horrible situation for all involved. I just can’t imagine being the parents or driver..

I can remember simpler times when free range children were everywhere. We knew enough to be (mostly) cognizant of our surroundings (even though we didn't know what cognizant meant). The difference today is the parents, they don't teach their spawn anything anymore.

I was free range too.....but not at 3 years old. 5 or 6 absolutely. A 5 year old doesn't have the mental capacity to care for a 3 year old.

Pffft. I was. Mom was some what horrified to find out I had been given a ride home in a Police car at age 3. Seems I had realized where the McDonalds restaurant was at a quarter mile from home. Bought a burger for a nickle with allowance money and was eating it on the way home. A policeman saw me walking and felt that I should be ushered home. Pfff what ever.

The neighbor came up and saved me from a thrashing by telling my mom. "You never told him not to did you?"
