Tyson closing two meat plants and selling a third one

Im not sure if its the same for other areas, but where im at at least. Cattle prices are at an all time low, while cost to raise them at an all time high. My landlords dad pretty much is butchering his own and selling then direct this year since he would barely be breaking even if he went through the traditional places. And he grows 100% of his own feed and very rarely suppliments. Selling direct he is getting around $4-5 a pound average across all cuts and still getting around a 50% profit on the critter. I can only imagine what tyson was making in raw profit since ground is going for almost $10 a pound locally and steaks are just laughable. Saw a new york strip going $40 a pound last time i looked for example.

The others who were buying feed are flat out losing money, which is funny in a sick way because processed beef prices are at an all time high, costs are at an all time high, but what they are actully offerring the farmers is at an all time low.

At least locally. Im not deep enough in the market to know how it is elsewhere but i have trouble imagineing irs not simular elsewhere. If not worse with data centers gobbleing up all the water that normally goes to feed and fuel crops fixing to drive feed prices to the #### moon.

Edit: oh and keep in mind tyson does a LOT of saline injection. So its not unususal to see their meat be as much as 30% added water by volume. So a cow goes much much further for them dispite the insane asking prices at the store and insanely low at market.

 

Beef cattle prices are at record high levels because of the low inventory. Anyone running a traditional cow/calf operation has been doing just fine the last couple of years.

THE AG CENTER

Tyson doesn’t expect a drop in their production do to restructuring their operation. Cargill in Ft Morgan is still shut down because they didn’t come to an agreement with the union. Wouldn’t be surprised if they just shutter that plant since they’ve already been hauling all the cats to Dodge City the whole time the strike has been going. Any time the price of fats gets a little too high the plants just slow the kill down until they get things back where they want it. It’s not like the feedlots can simply not sell cattle that are up to weight and keep them for a couple extra weeks.

With the drought in addition to the large range fires in the Midwest cattle inventory will probably stay on the low end for a while.

its gonna keep on and half the folks in N America aint gonna know what a good steak tastes like , caint afford it .
