I’ll be driving a 26’ Uhaul with a car trailer from NY to FL in a few days.

can someone tell me if I will need to stop at weigh stations on the way down??

if you are a private citizen, then no.

if you are doing this for hire, then yes.

Don't know about other states but in CA there are signs before the weigh stations saying rental trucks to pull in

can't say i ever saw one pull into any of the east coast scales. having a car trailer or not, i have even seen the larger ones (like the o/p's 26 footer) go by scales. CA must be desperate for revenue, to harass private citizens.

here, if you have a u-haul rental, you need a sign on the vehicle (both doors), signifying it is for hire. THEN you have to pull in.

as an example, when UPS or FedEx or Amazon rent trucks for the busy season, they have signage informing that they are for hire.

Depends on the state. South Dakota has signs directing rental trucks over 10000# to enter weigh stations.

Back in 2013, I and the family moved from Madison Wi., area to Midland TX. 2 large UHAUL’s both towing auto’s, took interstate as much as possible. Never pulled into any open scale.

Yes CA is desperate, but I kind of get it I've seen some rentals with a good lean going on.

I was told when I moved that if the sign indicates trucks, then you pull in. If the sign is labeled commercial vehicles, then you do not need to pull in.
I emailed the Indiana commercial enforcement section and they gave me this information.

Drive at night, they’ll all be closed except FL.

You will have to stop at the agriculture checkpoint right over the border inside Florida…don’t forget.
