My sons math tutor has a masters degree in mathematics, a science degree, and some other degree. Is 24 and gets paid $50 p/h to help my son improve his year 11 math for his job, casual as it is.. Wife wants the son to go to Uni to get a well paying job ?, he can then focus on being a youtube sensation if he chooses. Thing is gamers, influencers, youtubers contribute little to making stuff, growing stuff, fixing stuff; but the dumb money they reportedly make in such positions is influencing the hopes and dreams of many young people. Who fail to accept or realise their chances of fame and fortune are like sperm swimming up steam to the booty. The chances of a job after Uni are better that 1 in 40 million.
I largely retired at 48 leaving construction to drop 160K on a second hand dirty ol truck. I pay someone well to drive it and clear 10k a week, but I don't have any letters behind my name. Perhaps its near the same cost of some degrees, perhaps it also took 4 or so years to fully mature, but I feel ok for a grade 10 failure. I tell my son plenty of money to be made in the trades over the next 20 years, and play it right and you can be retired by the time your 40 or maybe less, and have multiple properties as well. Alternatively I'm encouraging him towards podiatry and chiropractor. Not sexy but can be a one man show using the phone for bookings and payments, require virtually no infrastructure or staff, and can rent / buy a small space to work from, anywhere, and work school hours or evenings fixing peoples pain. $160 per 20 minutes, 6hrs a day, nice and clean. Uni has its appeal. -
How many times have we seen this story? I am a college graduate and the big lie is that you'll be instantly vaulted into the top of the socioeconomic ladder. It's not even the slightest bit true unless you study the right thing, and even then, you don't make big money right out of the gate. It wasn't long ago where I saw a similar story about a young lady who got a degree in something similar but settled for a gig at Chipotle. These youngsters have to understand that you gotta study something valuable to society, and that doesn't always require a college degree.
The thing that caught my attention in the article is how he will gain respect from his peers back home for working in London. The college degree looks sexy, and in most cases, that's as far as it goes. When I began college, I remember a professor I had....he was an old gentleman. He said that if you went to college just to get a job, you went to college for the wrong reasons. That instantly threw the propaganda out of my head as a freshman. You get indoctrinated so much as a child with various things, but once you get out here in the real world, you see the lies. -
