Last week I tested out at TMC and passed my road test, tomorrow is my first opportunity since being back to go to the RMV and upgrade my license via the whole 3rd party testing/CSTIMS route.
I hadn't thought of getting a HAZMAT endorsement on my license until I discovered during orientation that the little H or X will add toward my percentage pay snapshot each month, so I figured I'll go get it.
Am I able to take the endorsement test tomorrow and then go complete the TSA/DHS screen a few days later, or do I need to get the letter from TSA before taking the test for the endorsement?
If I do take the test tomorrow, will the RMV just send me my CDL without the endorsement and then upon receiving the notification that I pass the BG send me a new one automatically or will they issue the license with the endorsement and I can't run anything HAZMAT until the RMV has been notified by TSA that I passed? My concern is that at the end of next week I meet with my trainer, and I'm told the person I'm paired with prefers to run weeks at a time instead of going home, so I don't know after this week when I'll have opportunities to button those things up.
Although, truthfully, with MA upgrading to processing REAL ID compliant DLs and IDs over the weekend, I should probably be more concerned that they'll actually be up an running at 8am tomorrow like they planned...

Every state is different some did allow one to take the test before the tsa background. And they would keep it on record. Once your backround cleared. The holder could then get the endorsement added by his or her state.
But no state will give the endorsement before being cleared by tsa. Even if your transferring from one state to another. The state that your transferring to won't except your hazmat. You will need to repeat the process of backround and testing.
As for as the backround in my eyes one should only pay for fingerprints once. As the never change, but that ain't the case with tsa. -
McUzi Thanks this.

My state DMV won't let you test until the TSA cert. is in their system.

In MA you have to show the letter from tsa before they give you test. Just went trough that last month in Springfield.

I don't remember on my first hazmat test, was a long time ago, when it first started. But in Md. on a cdl-hazmat renewal, you test and get fingerprinted at the same time. I asked the DMV cop doing my fingerprinting jokingly, what if my fingerprints/background come back bad this time. He said,we'll come get you,lol........and I'm sure they would.

Well, 2 RMV locations and a combined total of 4.5 hours spent between the two of them and I finally have my CDL-A in hand. Can't wait to get my hazmat background letter in hand.
