Cybergirl posted the announced rate increases last year.
http://www.thetruckersreport.com/tr...ups-announces-higher-shipping-rates-next.html
Okay, it was from a Fox news release. But it was handed to them by UPS.
It was complete BS !!!
I just got hit by the "new" rate. They have doubled it ! There is no 4 or 5% increase as stated in their news release.
AND, best of all. They have added a fuel surcharge. Which my local shipper says cost them a bundle after the holidays. Charges were retro, and "in fairness" UPS only charged them $1 per package delivered during that time frame.
Which they are unable to collect from their customers. Since some of the charges go back as far as October 2008.
UPS is collecting fuel surcharges, for last years losses.

My grandfather had a UPS drop thing in his store while it was still open. I know from working that that UPS has been charging fuel surcharges for YEARS.

HAD...and yesterday, Jan 6, 2009 aren't the same thing.
And yes, they have charged a fuel surcharge. But they have never come in after raising it again. And ask for back payments on past shipments, in an attempt to recover cost.
I ship regularly from this location...MY cost more than doubled, effective 01/06/2009
Normal cost, $13 and some change. Yesterday, it was $28.81
I can only tell you what the owner of the store told me. Whom I've known for over 30 years.
They are a designated drop spot, in a lost in space town. It's provided as a service by the store, for the locals. They collect no fees from UPS. But they do collect fees for UPS. If they're lucky, they see 2 or 3 outbound packages a day.
This is a you scratch my back deal. As they receive about 20 packages a day from UPS, it's a pharmacy.
So they had no choice. Pay the back dated fees, or start paying for all their inbound packages. -
My grandfather's store was a pharmacy with about the same deal. Sounds like just another way he got out at the right time.

This is VERY upsetting to hear because it will have a huge effect on everyone whether you directly use UPS or not.
For instance, at the job I just started on Monday they ship to their customers with UPS. Yes, they can just pass on the shipping cost to their customers, but when customer's orders go up that much just for shipping they may be more hesitant to order or order again, which could make sales fall, which could cause layoffs.
This cycle of spiraling costs affecting consumers which then affects jobs at the end doesn't seem to be ending, only getting worse. UPS shipping rates have a big effect on this economy.
