Which should be the better choice ABF or FedEx freight. As a city driver.

If one of those companies has a larger terminal than the other company then the work will be quite different between the two companies. It will be quite different in one city as opposed to another city so it might be helpful to know what city you live in to best answer that question.
ABF might be the best answer for your city but it might be the worst answer for my city. Or vice versa regarding UPS

Gotcha, I guess it comes down to Union vs. Nonunion.

The union has nothing to do with it. The amount of work available at each location has everything to do with it. Some locations are busier than others.

Had nothing to do with that, at least in my opinion. Fed Ex, traditionally non union, may be hiring in a busy hub and have to ability to work you full time hours until you retire. A smaller facility might not have that capability.

The same thing applies to ABF, a union company through and through.

It boils down to if you live in a crappy location you will be offered crappy opportunities

Go with Fed Ex Freight. Starting pay is a lot more than ABF, and they pay OT after 40.

Location does have a lot to do with if you get consistant work or not, but FXF and UPSF try to keep you busy on slow times, from my experience. They'll either have you work the docks, or work a couple hours a day, rather than being laid off, or miss a couple days here and there. FXF and UPSF don't really lay you off.

I agree with those that have said it depends on your location. I left FedEx Freight after 18 years at a location that has lost literally dozens of employees in the last 3 years. I planned on retiring there, but the atmosphere is absolutely toxic to this very day...

Probably the best place to work is at a major hub strategically situated between 250 to 300 miles from all of its satellite terminals.
One of the guys that lives near my terminal commutes a hundred miles so he can work out of the Carlisle terminal and he rents himself a little apartment near that terminal just so he can make more money and he's home on the weekends
