Well it depends on what type of work you are looking for they are two very different carriers in that regard. USX is a dry van carrier and PGT is a flatbed/curtainside/conestoga carrier. There are many threads on here about each company overall PGT has gotten all positive reviews from what I have seen and as for USX they have gotten a mix of positive and negative reviews. PGT will require more training for you being a newbie because you will have to learn how to properly secure and tarp. PGT will also be a much more physically demanding job. You will have to lift tarps and chains and binders and strap and secure loads. Tarps full of snow/ice/water are VERY heavy ask any of the flatbedders on here. The info that follows is what I was told by a PGT recruiter I have never worked for them I was offered a job after filling out an application but declined because I decided to stay where I am currently working. PGT runs mostly east coast they do not go west of I35 (Texas) and expect you to stay out 2 weekends a month. They haul a lot of steal (coils, re bar, pipe, plates etc) and a lot of dry wall. Now from what I have seen they have very well kept equipment and they will train you properly before cutting you lose on your own. You live in a good area for them. On the other hand USX as I said before is all dry van. It will be very little physical work except for drop/hooks and maybe the occasional driver assist unload (I do not know their policy on driver unloads they claim to be 98% no touch and 60/70% drop/hook). They are listed as a 48 state carrier whether you will actually run all 48 is a different story. Both companies run into Canada. I would personally choose PGT. Good luck with whichever you decide on!
OttMan Thanks this. -

Hey Miz,
They way I see it,anybody can pull a dry van,but if you go an learn flatbedding you will have a more diverse expericance to put on your resume down the road. I was taught old school trucking and was taught that the more different types of trailers you have experiance with will keep you working longer. In my 31 years I've driven tri-axle dumps, dump trailers, dry van, reefers, flatbed, and hauled heavy equipment, and last was tanker. Good luck on whichever company you decide to go with. But personally I'd go with PGT just to get the expericance. -

Crowhrse is 100% correct. Doing van freight is seldom more than opening and closing a pair of doors. The biggest challenge is getting into tight docks and making sure the top of the door locks are hooked. Doing open deck work is much more challenging as YOU the driver are solely responsable for the load securement and to ensure that it is not damaged by your securement.
Take the deck job if all things are equal as it raises you a notch higher. -
To let you guys know I am looking for the best hometime that's why I choose these 2 companies. US Xpress said they can get me a dedicated account that will get me home every weekend and during the week. PGT is mostly every weekend.

USXpress is about as bad as covenant. id opt for PGT if i were in your position.
