Couple caught carving names onto the Great Wall of China
In Beijing, China, on October 3, 2025, a young couple were caught carving their names and a heart onto the ancient stones of the Simatai section of the Great Wall. The act of vandalism was filmed by another tourist, prompting police to track down and fine the pair for damaging the UNESCO World Heritage site.

I've seen a lot of that all over Europe. Americans carving their names and hometowns or university name into structures or other antiquities that are 100's or 1000's of years old.

Graffiti is as old as, well, forever. I read a fantastic article about some folks who dig around in roman ruins, and apparently the Roman's had very advanced toilets, scratching things into the walls. Complaining is as old as time. What I am getting at, is graffiti in no way an original American sin.
