I spent roughly 13 years behind the wheel prior to making the transition to behind the desk in the safety office. I love what I do, the ability to interact with drivers and help solve their problems or at least point them in the right direction is great. The lack of respect they receive from other key individuals in the organization however is truly dis-heartening.
I just want to let y'all know, not everyone in the office is a POS, just like not every driver is a steering wheel holder. But there has got to be a better way to deal with the "us against them" mentality that has been festering for decades. What I need is advice on how a safety troll like me can help the drivers when there are those in an organization who do not respect them?

2. Put your boot up their rear end
3. Send them out with a driver for a month.
I prefer 3 but will settle for 2.NavigatorWife Thanks this. -
Moving on, as a driver with 25 or more years experience, my advice to you is very simple. Do not "Give" drivers respect. No sir. Those drivers within the company who truly deserve respect will "Earn" it.
I see no need in putting a blanket statement out that says every driver should be respected, because not every driver deserves respect. If every driver deserved respect, there wouldn't be businesses banning trucks from parking on their lots because of trash and other filth being left behind. There wouldn't be a need to have hygiene policies in place at many companies. There wouldn't be a need for a plethora of other policies, all of which boil down to a driver, a person, respecting himself first. As an industry, we don't need any need enemies because above all, we are our own worst enemy.Last edited: Jul 28, 2016

Treat drivers like people. Nothing more, nothing less.
Nothing more. Your job doesn't exist because of the drivers. Your job exists because some drivers don't work by the rules, or good drivers that have an oops moment. Oops as in paperwork or road or whatever.
Nothing less. I've seen company people that treat drivers like they shouldn't be allowed on the property let alone in the offices. They treat their pet better. Don't talk to a driver like a five year old.
Some drivers need a lot of guidance when there is an issue. Some just need a friendly reminder.
In all new postions, over time we find our way, and develop skills to best do our job.
