Has anyone tried this? I'm giving it serious consideration.

Well this type of installation is, IMHO, only going to work for mid roof/flatbed or similar situations. I first tried the normal readily available screw-in bird perch but many antenna mounts won't tighten up properly due to the diameter of the perch.

So next I tried a Top Gun Z-Perch I had laying around. These have a much beefier perch on them so tightening the mount worked out much better!

Seems to be much sturdier with the 5 foot Skipshooter(just a hair over 13'). The work continues............

When i ran a volvo i had good results by installing my own coax on the mirror,my own stud as well with a better bond than factory...Tried the bird perch method 1st but the diameter of the bp and screw hole for mirror were slightly different and i didnt wanna strip it out..Plus with the wind hitting the ant it would over tightened..

Regarding the factory mirror mounts on the Volvo...............we had quite few break with the stock antennas on the older trucks. I decided to avoid that route. I didn't like the way the Z-Perch mounted on the door. It seemed a little too flexible, for my taste, and it really needs longer than stock bolts which aren't included. This seems to be working out pretty good on the sleeper. Next step is some bonding. Sleeper cab to frame looks reasonably easy, but door to cab might be an issue due to the countersunk door to hinge bolts! I'll figure something out.

Maybe get a few stainless washers to fill the countersink and pick up a longer ss bolt to fit..
When i ran a volvo it was back between 09-15,things may have been different..
Oh well if cab wall works, enjoy it..
