Volvo D13 - motor sound getting louder -- mine was ...

Well I finally went into a Volvo Dealer to find out what the noise was - right away they
determined I was in need of a new CAM --

They took the top off - sure enough the cam was in pretty bad shape -

UNEVEN WARE - clearly and visually that was the issue!!! -Deep Ware-

    --> COST to repair >> 8.000 - 10.000 at Volvo Dealer:

I elected to have the work done outside - cost of cam alone is $ 2.000

Moral of the story - INCREASINGLY LOUD NOISES are issues to be resolved.

also if your buying a used Volvo - OPEN the top - have a look at the cam - 200 bucks
at any Volvo dealer .. may have to replace the gasket, but worth the expense.

KB3MMX, Jeck and Shock Therapy Thank this.

you are correct - but IF you do buy a truck generally there is a GRACE PERIOD - 15 days -
by Law - and if you want to be though you could spend the extra 200 - for peace of mind.

But the reality is - few will bother to do this anyway.

True, many drive drivers drive and pray "please don't let it break today". No matter what it might be. Engine noise etc etc. If there is a problem have it looked at. It always cost more down the road.

Then I would walk away from the truck, no matter how pretty it looks on the outside, it's the inside that pays the bills.

NOTE: yes Volvo wanted 8 to $10.000 to replace a CAM

but it can be done by an outside shop for about 4/5.000

CAM alone is 2.000 - labor is 10 hours

Isn't it time for an overhaul? How many miles you've got on it?

cams go on these engines all the time got to love the extended oil intervals. just make sure the shop you took it to can properly set backlash and engine timing and also all bolts mounting cam to dampner need to be replaced as they are one time use and make a lot of issues if one of them snaps.
