IMHO the ride is so much better with the weight as close as possible to each other. I use to always load trailer heavy when it wasn't my trailer and tires but the ride would be terrible.

For me it depends on my load, my fuel, the routing, the distance of the run. I like to keep the load and truck as close to balanced as possible. Sometimes I'll shift weight to the tandems for I can run with more fuel. It's nice to have a day or two w/ out stopping for fuel.

Having an extra 2000 pounds will not save wear on your drives. However more weight on the drives would be safer in my mind, especially in wet road conditions.

Heavier on the front end if given a choice. (drives VS trailer tandems)

It's always better to go heavier on the drives. You get better fuel mileage because you're pulling the load instead of dragging it. Heavier on the back causes your drives to bounce up and down and that forces your fuel pump to try and compensate even though it doesn't really need to.
Also gives you better traction on wet or slick roads.
