I have a class a CDL, but my son does not. I have a 2017 3500 ram that weighs 8500# empty. Buying a Appalachian goose neck empty weight 5500#. Gross vehicle weight. on truck is 14000#. Trailer is 18000#. Does anyone know what I should plate my truck for, and what weight to lower my trailer gross vehicle weight to? I was thinking truck 14000# and trailer 12000#. I want to help my son get his CDL, but I would like him to practice with me for awhile. We are in PA. And if that's the right weights, how much weight can we haul staying away from CDL license? Thinking 12000#?

Truck GVWR of 14K. Trailer GVWR 18K. That puts you at 32K GCWR. Doesn't matter if you only plate it for 13K and just run around empty all of the time, it doesn't change the GCWR or the fact that IF used commercially, you need a class A CDL to operate it. If it's your personal vehicle and he's just pulling around his and your stuff, then he just needs a class A DL.

Just another helpful tip in case you didn't know. I was informed of this because I travel to PA, NJ, NY, CT, OH quite often. You have to in addition to IFTA apply for a NY HUT Tax registration and have a decal on your truck giving you permission to operate in the State of NY. IFTA is not enough for NY State. I am under the 26,000 and I still have to have one. So since your so close to NY you should look into that. Hope all works out for you. Safe Travels
