I think many, like me, are switching careers to trucking in such a bad economy. Many have BA/BS, MA/MS or Doctorate degrees, so what did you do before? Can we have a poll?

    I start with myself.
I used to be a scientist, a professor until last year. Because my field is narrow, and any possible openning is lower level 'high tech labor' job :biggrin_25513: that does not pay as good as a truck driver, or has no future as comparable to a driver, I am switching.

    What about you?

Worked underground in mining a bit while been a trucker.I tell you man is not meant to be deep down there. My dad always had two things to say to people planning to switch careers in to trucking.(1) If want to see your face buy a mirror and if you want to see your A55 buy a truck! (2) If you are bored buy a truck , you are not guaranteed to enjoy yourself but you won't be bored.

Drove Class A for a moving company, Union Construction 5 years while going to night school for computer science, IT as Network Engineer almost 12 years and now want to go back driving.

I actully miss working for a moving comapny, this time (once business picks up) I am going to run my own truck and sign on with one of the big companies Allied, United or Atlas.

I guess I have made it full circle:biggrin_255:

Glad I am still in really good shape.

Learned tree topping and worked at that for a few years. ( I still do that once in awhile) Had worked as an exterminator for awhile. One day I was hitching and got picked up by a big truck. I've always had a fascination with trains and I thought, wow a train that steers. I've been driving ever since.35 + years and I still love it and can't think of anything I'd rather do.

I was a money tester for the U.S. Treasury. Each week they'd sent me a million dollars in assorted denominations, and at the end of the year I had to fill out a one question report: Did it spend? Yes/No

I got tired of having to track down a stamp to mail the report back, though, so finally quit. (Stinkin' stamps... there's never one around when you need it.)
