I have zero desire to drive combination vehicles so wondering if I even have to take it at all? I realize hazmat could come in handy though but what is the bare minimum to get CDL?

think you just take general knowledge and air brakes to get a class b CDL. Not sure if it varies by state

You will have to check with your state, but I have never heard of a state requiring more than just general knowledge and air breaks.

If you are getting class A then I think you need combination.

I have a B and going for an A so guess combo is required then...another question, if I already have air brakes, will I need to take it again for the A?

I wouldnt think so. If going for A need combo. But call your local dmv and they can tell you, or tell us what state you live in and someone might be able to help.

Call any company you plan to apply with and ask what they require.
Some dry van companies require tanker/hazmat endorsements. Why would a dry van company require drivers to have tanker/hazmat endorsements? Because they haul liquids in large plastic containers sometimes.

You will NOT have to take the air brake test again. However you will have to do the air brake testing as required during the driving test. As to your original question. For a B if you can find a truck without air brakes to test in all you need is just to pass the general knowledge test. To move up to an A in your case all you will need to do is take the combination vehicle test pass it and go do the driving test.
