What if I drive for 6 months to a year and go back to my other career?

    Hi everyone,

This is a follow up to my other thread. I am on the verge of getting my state to pay for my CDL Class A tractor trailer license. I'm excited and aprehensive about it at the same time. I'm making this move, because I love driving, and I am not able to get a job in my field yet. As I stated in my other thread, I'm an older worker.

Being that I really should get training by a trucking company after I get trained by the school, I am wondering about this: what if I get my trucking job after the training and stay with it for six months to a year. After that, if I can find a job in my plan a field I will do that. At least I will have the trucking job to fall back on. Is this a fallacy on my part? If I am out of the trucking driving field for a while and want to get back in, that means I will have to be trained all over again?

Yes, most companies require recent experience, otherwise they retrain.

Most insurance companies require recent experience but many large fleets are self insured and have what they call a 'refresher' course for guys that haven't driven in a while.

Do you have any idea how much those refresher courses are on average?

I doubt there is a fee. Think of it as company training lite.

Due to scheduling issues, I have to postpone the training.

You like driving, so look at Leonard's Express. Hire new cdl school grads. I've seen their trucks running through Las Vegas.
