Have enough surface to install a solar system, with appropriate batteries, that could run the house and be off the grid. When I did the calculations and put together the system, it would provide plenty of power and run the house for several days, with no charging from the panels. Add back in the charging from panels, a small back up generator( that likely would not be needed) and I would have no need for an electric company supply.

At that time, couple of years ago, the complete system would run about 22k. Yes the cost would take about 15 years to pay back the investment. The other side is I would never be without electricity to run things like refrigerators, freezer and the other household appliances.

The kicker. Due to state laws, complete disconnection is not permitted. The electricity provider has lobbied the state government to keep that from happening.

I asked an old man who taught welding. Mr. McKissack, how did you learn to weld so well?
(When he running a bead, looking up, hand overhead, and sounded like bacon sizzling steadily)
Said.. "Roger, I burned a lot of rod..."

"Being able to shoot well (Hit what you meant to) is quite similar....

Lets not get carried away with this spending spree....
Next thing you be wasting coin on tire black and cheap toss in floor mats.
Might consider getting The Shelia to accompany you next WM visit... Sort of a steadying influence.
She could get Brownie fixins too...

I keep looking at small solar systems for the house, Grid tied systems have never made sense to me. When I would be generating solar power the grid demand is too low, therefore the price/credits is not sufficient.

By small system I mean a small battery charge system that will recharge the batteries that would run the Night Lights, outdoor lights, HRV, and a couple of bathroom fans that move air around the house. All background non essential stuff.

I might consider adding the fridge and freezer to that list if whatever system I come up with proves sufficient and reliable enough.
