Whereupon B: whips out his blade and carves A up.

Old blank land is good usually. Examine the conveyance terms, don't need no old service stations leaky tank dirt to remove.
Across the south; younger generations went north, old folks stayed, Young folk settled in Chi and Det, old folks died. 10 to 40 acres went to weeds and buildings fell in. Abandoned and taxes not paid. Sheriff then was sheriff and tax collector. Had daily access to records of taxes paid/unpaid.
Most of the times, the wife was the office deputy and handled the tax end...Pay the taxes 3 years; not redeemed, it is yours. 6% interest if paid up.

Up until the law split the offices (sheriff/r/TX collector), every MS sheriff left office as a big land owner.

Get a county map showing section lines. Take a listing, look it up on the map. See where it is and what is adjacent. Pay tax <$100.
Check each year and pay 2 more if up and own it . Also; any offering close by, consider them. A grand over 3 to 9 years can put together a nice set of holdings. Worst case, 6% interest earned. Helps pass the spare time; less "taxing" than the way @ElmerFudpucker functions now...
