If I remember right, one of the two Polar Class icebreakers was in nearly perpetual maintenance status, so the other one would have to cover many of the other's patrols.

Same thing happened with the two 378' cutters in Boston back in the 80s. The Hamilton and the Chase.

They had gas turbine engines, and the Ham effed hers up somehow. Spent so much time at Support Center Boston they called her "Pier 715". (Her hull number)

So the Chase pulled two patrols to each one the Hamilton went on, and a couple of the Ham's patrols ended under tow back to Boston by another USCG vessel.

I heard a rumor that they started just using the Chase for patrols, and would just crossdeck crews between the Chase and Hamilton.

I believe most of the 378-footers went to the Philippine Navy......including the Hamilton.

 

Well, "International Orange and underway", actually, but I get the reference.

I met several Navy refugees who thought the Coast Guard would be easier, but that's a story for another day.

Not being a smart arse......these guys just didn't realize smaller ships, and smaller crews, means everybody has to cover two or more jobs.....
