    If you are driving a commercial truck with an 11,000 pound GVW and towing a trailer with a 14,000 pound GVW, what class license do you need to operate such vehicle and trailer together? Does it matter if the truck stays in state versus traveling cross state lines?

    25K GCWR is a class C. HOWEVER, that is approaching the 26,001# which triggers the need for a class A. That being the case, you'd be less likely to be hassled with that set-up if you have a class A. Keep in mind, registered weights don't mean anything...it is the combined axle ratings, the manufacturer's rating, etc...that they'll look at. If there is ANY possible way an officer can tally up your total GCWR to be above 26K, I'd just get the class A and not worry about it.

    yeah because of the trailer, you'd need a CDL. You need a CDL when hauling freight for pay and/or pulling a trailer with a gvw of 10,000 lbs or more.

    Depends on your state. Some like NY if memory serves would require something other than your basic license. My state and the federal rule is the combo of the two has to exceed 26k. So anything 26k and under you're ok with a standard license. The only way they'll tally up the weights is by what the vin tags say on each. There won't be any other way they'll determine that. So if your truck and trailer only add to 25k and you don't live in one of the few states that say otherwise you'll be fine without a cdl.

    Assuming no Haz-mat, no CDL is required for the above described combination vehicle as it does not have a GCWR of 26,001 pounds or greater.

    Part 383.5
    Combination Vehicle (Group A)—having a gross combination weight rating or gross combination weight of 11,794 kilograms or more (26,001 pounds or more), whichever is greater, inclusive of a towed unit(s) with a gross vehicle weight rating or gross vehicle weight of more than 4,536 kilograms (10,000 pounds), whichever is greater;

    Wrong. No you don't. Not on the federal level at least. Some states may require it but most don't. As long as your combined GVWR is less than 26K you don't need a CDL. Regular class C is fine even if for hire.

    No CDL period but if your combined GVWR is over 10k and it is for business purposes the dot rules apply once you cross state lines. Log book, dot number, med card, etc
