Hey everyone,
I want to understand more about the equipment I'll be working with and ensure I'm handling everything safely and correctly.
Can anyone here share some insights into the types of materials used for fuel tanker trailers? Are there different materials for different types of fuel? Any tips or advice for a rookie like me would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance for your help!
Safe travels,
What material is a fuel tanker trailer made of?

Non sparking metals.
Hose fittings and connector fittings are pot metal and brass. Again, non sparing metals.Richard_Trucking, Flat Earth Trucker and Diesel Dave Thank this. -

It’ll be Darwin, assisted by the trailer trash lady at Walmart, leaving her car running while smoking Marlboros pumping $3.86 of gas into her crapbox express with one headlight and smashed door held on with duct tape. -
FCMSA's hazardous area has published 'specifications' for all HM trailers divided into different 'SPECS' for various products to be transported under their authorization.
The SPECS are updated as technology and materials improve and the 'authorized' trailer spec can change, often with the older spec remaining in use until aged out of use.
Incorrect use usually has semi-disastrous results.
Caustic Soda [Sodium Hydroxide] eats aluminum.
Yes the 'story' has some truth, Quadrel Bros. had an aluminum wagon loaded in San Juan and dropped at the pier and the next morning there wasn't much left.
At Matlack we missed one sub note requiring a lining to use a stainless steel trailer and the product ate it's way out.
On the other hand the introduction of FRP trailers made lined trailers backhaul-able as it was washable where rubber linings were 'pickled' to one product and always came home empty.
Fuel loading is specialized and separated from anything else so contamination by something corrosive to the tank is near impossible.
Biggest danger is 'harry the driving hat' driving over your hoses. -
