I just acquired my Class A combination CDL with tanker endorsement on my own without schooling. What should I look for when seeking a trucking job. What should I watch out for? I want experience so one day maybe I can go out on my own and would like to be home on weekends if possible. Thanks any advice I will take

It's going to be awful tough without the 160 hour certificate. I'm sure folks will chime in, but your options will be limited. Unfortunately, we live in a world ruled by Insurance Companies and Lawyers. Both of those entities pretty much pull the strings when it comes to hiring in this industry. Good luck!

Watch out for the Chicago 1099 White Volvo crowd. Sure.... they'll probably hire you, but you won't make any money, and they will eff you over like you have never been effed!

Whatever you do don’t go with one of the mega carriers. Waste of time in my opinion. Find a smaller, mid sized company. ASK AROUND! If they have many drivers that have been with them for a decade or longer you know they’re a good company. The company I work for? Probably half the drivers have been here for 10 years or longer. Drivers with experience do not stay with companies they’re unhappy with because they don’t have to. If they’re sticking around it’s because they’re happy.

get in with a really good trainer! One that sits beside you while you’re driving not in the back behind the curtain. Pick his brain and take in all you can. Drive hard for that company for 18-24 months and then you’re set! The World of truck driving will be at your finger trips from there on out unless you screw it up.

"get in with a really good trainer". In this business, that is like going to Denny's and telling the waitress you want " A really good 24 OZ PORTERHOUSE". You are gonna' get what your gonna' get, and it ain't gonna' be a porterhouse, and it ain't gonna' be 24 ounces!

    Ok
    ty I live
Thank you very much that is very good advice and will use it. My biggest worry about the industry is not the job itself but the people. The more I’m on here it seems there are 10 morons to every one positive person so thank you for the advice and appreciate the positive outlook. I just hope it’s this board and not how it really is, if so I may have to reconsider.

Without a school certificate you are not likely to get hired by the megas anyway so you won't get screwed there. Look for small company that hire W2 drivers. Stay away from 1009 jobs if at all possible. You may end up making a lot of calls but don't give up.
