Let's face it, our choices are very limited. I take my own food most of the time, but there are just days when you feel like a table or booth and getting a good meal in a sit-down restaurant. Fast food sucks for the most part, and every truck stop in the world seems to have a lousy sandwich shop or a Subway that we all get sick of. I can't handle places like Iron Skillet or Denny's very often. The quality and service varies a lot depending on the location, and most of the time the best you can hope for is a meal that is just average in quality for a high price.
So where do you go out of your way to stop for a great meal?
For the last 2 years I've been working the I-5 between San Francisco and Seattle. There are very few decent places to eat along the entire route. There is one in particular that I'll go out of my way to visit, and that's the Rolling Hills Casino in Corning California. They have a huge truck parking lot that's clean with security, great showers, spotless bathrooms, and the best buffet this side of the Mississippi. They have every kind of food imaginable, but my favorite is the prime rib. Every Tuesday and Thursday nights they have half off for those of us over 50 as long as you have one of their Player's Club cards which are free. So you get to gorge yourself with great food for $9 which beats the heck out of fast food or a Denny's any day. Whenever possible, I try to stay and eat at casinos. Nevada always has good food at border towns for a great price.
My other favorite stop was in Colorado on the I-25 south of Colorado Springs called Obie's Fillin' Station. Great BBQ, a full bar and an overnight lot. They have a pup trailer in the back that they converted to a smoke house and their BBQ is really great.
Where are your favorite places to eat on the road?

I used to stop at Exit 86 on I5 in Oregon at a place called Heaven on Earth restaurant. They have good food. Giant cinamon rolls. Plenty room for trucks across the road.

On the road ?
Usually the right shoulder, safer that way and convenient too, cuz the buzzards have usually already dragged the road kill to the shoulder. -
On the way to or out of Atlanta I stop at the big truck stop at ex 165 in Lincoln Alabama. Everything you need, and everything you want. Great food, a nice motel, a couple of drinking places if you have the time and inclination.
Another great one just a few miles east, Newborn truck plaza in Talapoosa Georgia. Food that would make your grandmother jealous. And the sweetest Georgia Peaches waiting on you.(I do mean the servers)SteveScott Thanks this. -
I prefer to dine at the Y

If you're staying at the Haines City Florida Pilot, consider a short walk over to the State Hotel, in the center of which is a little restaurant called R Place.
R Place features American and Italian cuisine and has a homestyle atmosphere. Full standard breakfast menu and a buffet at the weekend. For lunch and dinner they offer soups, salads, sandwiches, pizza, BBQ, and seafood classics along with traditional 3 course dinners and desserts. I mean they pretty much have it all. Beer, Wine and Homemade Sangria. The place is loaded with locals. A hidden gem from the truckers who stay parked only a few hundred yards away and are relegated to Subway, Wendy's or Denny's and don't even know about this fine food just few steps further.Last edited: Apr 20, 2018
