As a owner operator, Independent Contractor, do you know the best way to get your own route other then buying one? I'm looking for local routes. I live in NJ but I'm willing to travel for the route if the money is worth it. Whether its in DE or Ma or PA or NY. Id appreciate feedback from ones that actually have experience in this field and know what they're talking about. Thank you all in advance
Let me tell you what I have, a 24ft 2008 Hino Box truck with a lift gate, full OTR authority DOT & MC#s (Non-CDL), Hand truck, straps, blankets
Now who do you suppose is going to give away their customer base? Start cold calling and knocking on doors.
What I'm asking isn't for anyone to send me their customer base. What are you talking about? And I call and knock on doors every single day, that is why I'm in this forum asking for advice. If I want negativity I wouldnt be in here seeking help, how about something positive and helpful? Jeez
You're basically asking for someone else's bread and butter that's exactly how it reads. Don't hold your breath. He gave you good advice. Figure out your own way. Easiest place to start - loadboards.
You want a route and don't want to pay for it. The only way to make that happen is to knock on doors and build your own route. That should be pretty obvious. Independent 24' box truck owners are a very small minority in this industry. I used to have a guy call me every week with one looking for work for it. Aggravating for me, but he was persistent.
We worked to get our customers, no one gave us a list. Knocking on doors, load boards, respectful cold calling, WHATEVER IT TOOK,we just kept at it.Nobody wants to just give you customers they worked very hard to get, unless you offer something in return. This is a very give and take business. If you get some work, others will notice. There is no better way to get more business than doing a good job for your customer. Good luck.
Just a tip to get you started in your hunt, where do you see other trucks like yours loading? Another suggestion would be any large furniture retailers or manufacturers that offer home delivery or maybe you could be the answer for their home delivery. Good luck!
