I've only done flatbed, so it would be good to hear from someone that has done both....or at least has a very good understanding of what's involved.

I posted this in the car haul forum too.

@Banker is actually a 5' 2" 19 year old female. She loads cars all day long, and will have some insight.

Myself, a 350 lb 6'8" tall ex linebacker turned platform slave, marvels at her tenacity.

Does one load a month on average really qualify you as a platform slave? Yes I am jealous but it is a legitimate question.

I know I said I would never show this, but I can’t keep a secret very long.

Now, on to a serious answer. I trained to do Auto Carrier years ago, using a tractor/trailer with articulated stinger. I was younger and hadn't done flatbed at the time. I have cousins that have only done auto carrier. Let's just say, tarping in a stong wind is probably equal to the amount of exertion and work you'll do auto carrier loading. It's not something for the "large" of us, as you're crawling in and out of vehicles, along small areas of footing and constantly climbing up and down on the equipment. It's similar to flatbed, but I think more intense and consistent more of the time, than when doing flatbed, with the exception as noted above about trying to tarp in a high wind and maybe cold environment, since you're doing both in that environment, but tarping would win, I think, in this situation.

Nothing but respect for the car haulers as it's a job like flatbed. Not for those with weak constitutions.

Thats a really interesting point abouy having to be a monkey, never realpy thought about that part. Makes car hauling almost appealing to me actually, thats the part I enjoy most about flat, securing complicated stuff while climbing around like an insane person. Its industrial rock climbing of a sort
