    Hello Everyone,

Figured it wouldn't hurt to ask the forums advice on my truck purchase dilemma.

I'm looking to spend around 30K for a used truck and I've found two that I'm debating on.

Which would be a more reliable truck?

Truck 1) 2011 T660 (400 HP Cummins ISX and Eaton 10 Speed) that has been a fleet lease with all repair records and looks like its in great shape (new tires, good interior, suspension is solid.... 750,000 miles. for sale for 31K (My only concern is how soon could I need to do an inframe)

Truck 2) 1998 W900 (545hp Cummins N14 and an Eaton 18 speed)... now this is a strange part... This guy is desperate to sell.... He just dropped his price to $15,500. He has receipts for the new motor that he installed himself a year ago and a new clutch. I'm pretty sure the Odometer has rolled over and it has 1.5 million on the chassis... Hope its not 2.5 but carfax was no help.

The guy is really shifty and balked at taking it to a shop for an inspection because it doesn't have insurance. SO I figured I would bring my mechanic to him...

I kind of like the old diesels without emissions garbage and hear the N14 is a solid motor. at 15,500 I can afford to repaint the truck, get new seats, fix the AC, make cosmetic upgrades, and still afford to fix anything major. Assuming his motor is solid (It ran fine when I was there).

Looking for a truck that won't be a nightmare or leave me stranded. I'm just going out to drive on my own. I want something that will ride nice... I just like how the old diesels are simple technology and easy to fix.

By the way I will be towing a flatbed and potentially running in the rockies.

Not a fan of fleet trucks. I would go with the W900.

Thanks Guys! I was leaning to the W900 too. I just cant figure why the guy is shifty.. maybe thats just how he is. I'm pretty mechanically inclined and usually do most of my own work (aside from motor swaps and major things). All the small stuff that the truck needs is no problem. but I still want a second opinion.

I'm afraid that T660 fleet lease will blow up in a year and then I'll have 40K+ invested in a hurry.

Go with the w900. If motor is new the rest is minor

I have a 93 t600 that just turned 2,000,000 on the truck. Nothing major wrong with it. Just little things that I can slowly work on.

Grab the s/n off the engine. Call or go to Cummins and give them the number. They can tell you when it was built, put in service etc

Screw that, bring 9k and hand it to him. If he doesn't take it, walk.

If you're looking to spend 30, get the W9 for around 12-14 and if anything goes wrong you have 15k to fix it.

All other things aside, avoid the newer trucks with the 2010 emissions equipment. They are guaranteed to cost you time and money down the road.
