Short background: I've been running as an owner operator for about a year and started out intrastate, operating within my 100 mile air radius. I have a side dump and a belly dump that I primarily haul rocks/aggregate with in Nebraska
Now I have some opportunities to haul aggregate from South Dakota and Iowa. There's a chance at some work down in Kansas in the next year or two, as well. I want to do this all properly and legally so to be in compliance. I've had some bad advise from people saying to just chance it and cross the state line without it...Just drive casual. That's coming from a lot of the farmers that I work for.
Anyway, finally got into MOTUS (that's another story) and updated things there. As a result, all the vultures are blowing up my phone the same way they did when I applied for my DOT number a year ago. It's my understanding that I need a process agent to file a BOC3 for me, I cannot do it myself.
So... who should a guy use? I certainly don't want one of these cold-calling liars to screw it all up for me. Do I need to talk to the OOIDA, J.J. Keller, or another big name association like that to get this all buttoned up?
As always, thanks for the advise!
Who should I use for a process agent?

This is who I've used for many years. Multi States Agents for Process. I stumbled across them when I was new. $50/year.
They are easy to work with and seem like a smallish outfit, which I prefer supporting over a big company.
HomeSiinman, J.R., The_SnowMan710 and 1 other person Thank this. -
Is the boc 3 just for when you start the authority?
Or do have to keep paying a yearly fee to process agent?The_SnowMan710 Thanks this. -
It's my understanding that a BOC3 is a one time thing. One company contacted me and said they're a blanket registered agent so they can "do it all" for me. They sent me a quote and it said they'll process the MC number application for $550, file the BOC3 for $200, and do the UCR for $225. That all strikes me as way too much money.
J.R. Thanks this. -
Insurance files the BOC3 while the process agent is your on-file contact for any state or other agency and anyone looking to reach out to you over legal matters that can't find your actual address.
cheap and little used unless they also do Highway use Tax, etc. too.Siinman, The_SnowMan710 and J.R. Thank this. -
Just to clarify, I had ooida help setup my authority with the boc 3 and drug testing.
I found a much lower cost drug consortium, and had planned to drop ooida membership .
Do I have to stay a member to keep boc 3 active?The_SnowMan710 Thanks this. -
Sorry for hijacking your thread SnowMan710
I used ooida when set mine up and they used to be very helpful.
The last few years it's turned into a nickel dime you to death for any help.
I wouldn't recommend them, unless the boc 3 is a yearly requirement.
If it is I guess the membership would justify it.The_SnowMan710 Thanks this. -
The biggest thing that helped me when I had my own truck was when I realized that almost everything a company can do for you can be done by you for a fraction of the cost. Make sure any website you work with ends with .gov. These are the only true FMSCA websites. Others will do their best to look authentic and make you think you need what they offer. I know UCR can be done yourself. Idk about boc 3 I don’t remember even having that, but the only thing I had a company for was drug and alcohol consortium i do know that.

I agree but you can't be your own process server.
I only pay one other third party service in my business, period, and that's the outfit I pay $7.99 to to file my 2290.
And it has always been my understanding that this is annual. I would love to know more if someone knows a way around this.OldeSkool, J.R. and The_SnowMan710 Thank this. -
Paid $50 (All American) 28 years ago, haven't had to pay since then. Only way I'd have to pay more is if my registered address isn't valid and someone has to go through the process agent to serve me.
