Whatever you do don't go with Werner. Unless of course your only looking to make a mere 200 a week. you make more then that working in your local walmart

Your in a bad boat being 20. By the time you hit 21. Most co's still want 23-25 year olds and 6 months recent OTR or a recent Grad. What I did was joined the Army when I was 18 as a truck driver and got a gig driving a KW pulling a tanker when I got out.

The problem with being 21 is crossing state lines. Even if you get a gig local for a few years if you decide to go OTR they won't count your exp Guys come off the road and if they wait longer than 6 months few ever get hired again unless they do a refresher. Doesn't matter if they drove OTR 20 years.

yah your going to have a hard time of it. I remember when I first got my licence and I had a hard time and I was in my late 20's. Started out working for a courier company and worked my way up in truck size and got a break hauling deck for a small outfit. But nowadays it's tougher and being that there isnt a driver shortage anymore and lots of experenced drivers out of work.... Anyway when your 21 try and get in with a decent company that will train you. That is the best and maybe by that time there will be more driving jobs. Good luck to you

Roehl hired me at 21 - that was over 7 years ago now though.

Freebird135 has the right idea, this is the way to build a career in the industry starting early instead of job hopping. Hindsight is 20/20 but I wish I had started at Con-way Freight (CCX at the time) right away.

Generation Follower, Freebird135 is also dead on about UPS Freight. That is a top 5% job in any blue collar industry - not just trucking.

the LTL's, UPS, Fedex are a good way to start, one thing to keep in mind with UPS, the rumors are true, one scratch on that brown paint, even if it's not your fault, and you get your walking papers. Oh and expect to immediately become indentured to the union.
