I thought they were a category of driver under the protection of Teamsters.I hope no mega carriers treat OTR drivers this poorly. What is this business about classifying them as independent contractors? Are they company drivers or O/O?

Rude, holier than thou, Longshoremen Union workers. Their days are numbered though with new technology replacing them with robotic "ghost ports."
First one is under construction in California with more to come.
China built the first one and it's a huge port with only 9 workers.
Robots load and unload the ships and stage the containers for truck pickup.
Google (or Bing) and see the ghost ports in action.

Well well well..so they are victims? What keeps these folks at those companies? If I get screwed, I'm gone. Plain and simple. Mayby there is something I don't quite see, or understand?. Heard said.." if you always do what you always have done..you will always get ,what you always got".

The thing is I don’t get is why drivers keep driving for them.

Just checked that out. Those longshoremen are soon to be cut down to size. Couldn't really happen to a better bunch. Rude is a mild term.

A great weapon against Orwellian technology.
Those pesky robots that threaten to end human liberty and prosperity on Earth as we know it.
Ethical hacking. Infect that robot that just kicked you to the curb as a longshoreman or that autonomous vehicle that just stole your truck driving job with malware.

    Cyber Sabotage

    "Cyber-tage"

Using my futuristic imagination, the war against such technology by those unemployed people not so geeky might come in the form of terminating those robots with gunfire, fire, chemicals, LAW rockets, explosives, molten steel or electric current to "stop their clocks for good" is still an option. See the 1973 film Westworld, the 1974 made-for-TV movie Killdozer and the 1991 film Terminator II for details.

Except ports don't need to deal with existing infrastructure and human drivers.
