This thread was started in 2015. Now short haul lumber rates are fairly good. I see load board rates for $3.50-$4.50 regularly. My record so far is $7.65 per mile for a short run or around 100 miles. How long is this going to last??

$765 for 100 miles is not good, especially if you have to tarp that lumber.

Personally I don't even consider lumber loads requiring tarping, unless they have one hell of a tarp fee. No tarp lumber, steel, roofing, insulation, and specialty loads are where its at.

There are so many good suggestions in here the broker is bound to be able to use one to his advantage, my first thought was hey keep the cream for yourself and run your own freight, but then if hes only acting as a broker that'll be hard to do. I would of thought @ $3 per mile that would be a pretty good rate, perhaps as its only a few hundred miles and whats at the other end for a back load? Can't see why anyone would not be interested in running a load at $3 per mile for 800 miles with a total of $2400? With current Diesel fuel at $5 per gallon at 8 mpg using 100 gallons for a $500 refill would still leave you with $1900 in change If they could get a back load @ $3 per mile that would be pretty good earnings for the week.
