in low gears you will try to avoid full torque, when seriously loaded.
volvo have quite high torque (limit) numbers in low gears, causing lot of wear in tires, easy spinning, bit uncomfortable ride and transmission wear in very heavy apps.

I'm going to stop arguing on this. Everybody can see the graphs and read what both you and I wrote, and draw their own conclusions. OK?

The Cummins graph has an error, it says 1150 RPM where it should say 1100 RPM. I corrected my graph accordingly:

    torque.png

So now it is 1000 lb-ft at 900 RPM. But still a lot lower as with the MX-13.

anyway my parents have just returned from states, they were on eastern coast.
my father says that winter service equipment is ridiculous for our standards.....and since snow cant be properly removed with plough they have to use huge amount of salt....cars looks completely white.... he says he saw many cars and pickups on highway 95 and 91 so rust that some of them are missing serious surface of fenders ....he is not sure if those are vehicles for winter only or not, but he says it is terribly looking.

Depending on load and aerodynamics, many engines would struggle to run 75 mph @ 1100 rpm with a full load, let alone overcome a small hill or headwind.

Speed takes power. To run 75 mph, about 400 hp (or more) is easily required, and not that many engines have 400+ horsepower at 1100 rpm.

Even the 530 DAF is pretty much flat out at 1100 rpm to achieve 400hp. The slightest hill or headwind would require a down shift.

Cruising at 1100 is fine when running at 50-55 mph. But, if you want to run at 75+ mph......
Maybe our north american friends can answer this?

also nobody mentioned so far that engine change its sweet spot depending on % of load on engine.

for example cruising speed require about 140hp at 85kmh and you can achive this at lets say 1150rpm and sweet spot will be most likely at this rpm as manufacturers spend days and days to tailor that precisely to fit engine caracterics with driveline ratios.
but when you need more power lets say 80-100%, lowest fuel consumption can change quite a lot, on 501 series from 1250 to 1450rpm.

I agree, but the principle remains. If you have a speed range of up to 75 mph (or even higher), then you need more gears as with the Eaton.

Not necessary, but yes if you can cruise long time at different speeds. I.e. one state 65 other 75. That is almost half of gear. And this is nice to have eaton.

In europe more or less you will always have same cruise speed or it will differ very little

You forgot the Supercrawler gears of the Unimog, 535:1 :) . Including the differential and hub reduction, you get 3200:1 .
