Why do so many reefer companies run as team drivers only?

Perishable freight has to get somewhere with a quickness, especially if you haul produce of any kind. For instance, you may get apples in Washington state, and it goes to the east coast so teams can get it there in 1.5 to 2 days. A solo is going to hold that load at minimum double those days. Reefer freight has to get there asap. There are a decent number that run solos

1.5 days from Washington state to the east coast? 36 hours? Must be X1-Heavy out there again. ;)

I ran only team loads when I had a reefer (w/no co-driver). Pay is 1.5 times as much to run the same load if the truck has to average 60 MPH over 1500 miles. I ran mostly west coast (Nogales to Blain WA for instance) so I could crank my 379 up to 75 MPH most of the way and still get a four hour nap in Idaho in the middle of the trip. That wouldn't work with a 61 MPH Fruitshaker.

Seattle wa to Newark nj is about 2,800. For someone to do that in 2 days some serious speeding and running that clock mega low would be involved lol.

Because reefer means a lot of the freight is perishable and needs to be delivered ASAP generally 2-4 days from pickup. Takes 6 days for a solo driver to run LA to NYC assuming 500 mile average or a team can get her done in 3.

Ahhh I understand. Also most likely these team reefer runs pay better.
